Friends of the Library
Friends of the Library - History
In the year 2000, the Newaygo Carnegie Library (and its Croton Branch) was the only library in Newaygo County that did not have a “Friends of the Library” organization supporting its efforts. Over the course of three months early that year, a committed group of volunteers, with the help of the Friends organization from White Cloud, founded the Newaygo Carnegie and Croton Friends of the Library.
As the library developed into a district library, the group's name changed to the Friends of the Newaygo Area District Library (NADL). However the organization's commitment to the Library never changed. Through fund-raising activities and advocacy within the community, the Friends continued to work and increase the presence of and resources for, NADL.
The majority of funds come from the sale of donated items sold at the Virginia Cuipidro Bookstore. The book sale had originated in a small room in the Carnegie Library basement. Eventually the sale was housed in the former community room of Newaygo City Hall before moving into the present facility, named in honor of a founding Friends member. Countless volunteer hours were spent organizing the wide variety of books and materials given to the Friends by generous supporters of the Library. Open one or two days a week, the Bookstore has enabled the Friends to enhance the Library and its programming in a number of significant ways by providing funds for: Books; bookcases; library remodeling; decorative rugs and furniture; computer chairs; a digital camera; summer reading program shirts; guest speakers; and equipment such as a television and DVD player for programming.
Most recently, in 2017, the Friends formed the Marilyn Davis and Jane Bode Fowler Fund for Friends of the Newaygo Area District Library through the Fremont Area Community Foundation. An annual disbursement from the endowment will support the summer reading programs at NADL for years to come.
Members of the Friends continue to give generously of their time and talents. You are welcome to become a Friends member or to donate your gently used books and other items. Together we will help contribute toward the ongoing support of our Newaygo Area District Library.
